Barth, Paul

Barth, Paul

Bio: (1858-1922) German philosopher and sociologist. Barth studied philology, history, and philosophy at the universities in Breslau and Leipzig, and after that worked as a professor of philosophy and education in Leipzig. He was the editor of the journal Quarterly of Scientific Philosophy from 1899 until 1916.

In Philosophy of History of Hegel and the Hegelians (1896), Barth presented his critique of Hegel, and in Philosophy of History of Sociology (1897), he presented the history of sociology and his philosophy of history. Barth argued against purely materialist interpretations of history, emphasizing the power of ideas in shaping social evolution, which he characterized as the "life-principle" of society. His books, Elements of Education and Teaching Based on Psychology and Philosophy (1906), History of Education in the Light of Sociology and History of Ideas (1911), and The Necessity of a Systematic Moral Teaching (1922), were focused on the development of moral education.
